Skagen watches began with the story of two immigrants who came to New York from Denmark. This couple was here to begin marketing a brand of watches in order for the Danish company to expand worldwide. This brand was a nice watch to have and began the Skagen ladies watch line.
The immigrants found that there was a liking of the design as well as the European brand, but watches with just the logo of the company could not make the Americans buy the product. There had to be quality designs to go along with the brand name.
This made the couple order four unique designs from the Danish company and almost eight-hundred pieces. These initial designs became the Skagen brand. The order was sold quickly and another order went just as rapidly. The beginning of Skagen was launched.
The couple worked on 30 more models and designs for the next year. The two had a distinct idea of what Americans may buy and were looking to purchase. These models were designed with this in mind and it worked. The models began to sell and the company was slowly beginning to grow.
A Scandinavian design and quality was what brought these models to the attention to the public. Along with this was the price of each piece. They were priced in order to sell to everyone and then a catalog publisher was accidentally introduced into the organization. The American publication placed a watch on the back of their catalogue and the Skagen brand was launch into another category.
From their New York apartment, the couple earned a staggering $800,000 from the catalogue advertising. Every bit of stock was sold and additional orders had to be filled. The catalog watch was a woman’s design that the immigrants from Denmark had developed themselves.
After this early success, the designers teamed up with Bloomingdale’s who took the Skagen brand just on a trial basis. Every bit of stock the store had sold in one day. This began the revolution and it has not stopped since. The company was named the as one of the bright rising stars in the watch market in 1998. This would allow the company to launch into other markets, including their homeland.
The Denmark office was launched and several dozen stores were opened. The company then expanded to Germany, England and other European nation. With over 250 designs and 5,000 stores, the Skagen brand is now being sold throughout the known world. The little investment and the idea of the original four designs made this into a worldwide company that continues to expand.
The little apartment where the first designs were launched from has turned into a 170 employees, all being involved in designing and developing new models. The passion of just two individuals has made it back to their home country of Denmark and now the rest of the world.
The first ideas that brought the Skagen ladies watches to be the nice ones to have are still being kept by the rest of the company. A mission statement from the Skagen company concentrates on a unique mens watches at prices that can be afforded by everyone and used in almost every situation.
